Abi learned about oral histories in class this past month. So we asked Mima and Banka some of their histories. It was fun learning new things and especially for to realize what things in life are more developmental and what things are due to time.
Favorite Trip
Banka
When he was 14 he rode 150 miles on the Mormon Trail on horseback from Casper, WY to South Pass.
Mima
Her family went on a trip every year. She loved visiting her grandparents in Washington. She has five sisters who would always read and wave to people driving next to them from their trailer. She loved driving next to the Columbia River.
First Plane Ride
Banka
He flew from Wyoming to California to visit a friend - he wasn’t afraid but was super excited - 18 years old
Mima
She was married (so older than 18) she flew from Salt Lake City to Portland, OR for a Coast to Coast Hardware convention.
What was your favorite book as a kid?
Banka
Ping - he read it a lot because it was about a duck who was on his own and so was Banka a lot
Mima
Little House on the Prairie books - they were the best adventures
How did you meet each other?
Banka was a super good roller skater and me Mima roller skating at Rick’s College - showing off his moves
What was your favorite snack/treat as a kid?
Banka
He loves Quench Soda and his mom always had ice cream. He would eat half gallons in one sitting. His mom’s weakness is ice cream.
Mima
Every day after school Mima would have a slice of her mom’s homemade whole wheat bread that was layered with butter and then peanut butter and honey
On Sunday nights, her family would pop popcorn and she loves it still!
Have you ever ridden a rollercoaster?
Banka
“Oh yeah! I love rollercoasters!” - Lagoon, Disneyland, Disneyworld, Knott’s Berry Farm, Busch Gardens & Mall of America (where he “saw the Backstreet Boys in concert” too).
Mima
“Oh yes!” Her favorite on is at Busch Gardens - she screamed the whole time and had to ride it two more times to scream some more because it felt so good!
What did you do with your friends?

At home - Her BFF lived next door and they would ride bikes all the time - they’d play spies and play in the playhouse
At school - She would roller skate always - they were the kind that clamped on her shoes
What were your clothes like?
Banka
Wranglers, white undershirt, button down shirts, cowboy boots, and cowboy hat
Mima
In 2nd grade she wore dresses that her mother had made her or her two older sisters hand-me-downs (also dresses). Her dress in 2nd grade was plaid. During the summers her mom would take her and her sisters to the fabric store where they would pick out 4 dress patterns and 4 fabrics to have their dresses made out of for the coming year
What was your 2nd grade class like?
Banka
Miss Lenderman - he doesn’t remember this year at all. He can remember other years though - he liked school
Mima
Mrs. Meyers - she went to school at Bearview Elementary and it only had 4 classrooms (1st-4th grade), one small office, and a kitchen. They would line up next to the kitchen, get their food, and eat back at their desks.
